Hijikata Beats Djokovic in Paris
Qualifier Rinky Hijikata ends Novak Djokovic’s Turin bid, 2–6, 6–3, 6–3, at the Paris Masters.
Qualifier Rinky Hijikata beat seven-time Paris champion Novak Djokovic 2–6, 6–3, 6–3 at the Paris Masters, ending Djokovic's bid for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Hijikata, ranked 83rd, won in two hours and 13 minutes for his first win in three meetings with Djokovic and his fourth Top-20 win this year.
Djokovic, 39, said he dominated for a set and a few games, then lost control as Hijikata kept the ball low and did not miss. He needed at least a semifinal run to stay alive for Turin.
Lorenzo Musetti beat new world No. 1 Alexander Zverev 7–6(5), 6–2. Quentin Halys beat Frances Tiafoe 6–3, 1–6, 7–6(9), helping Arthur Fils lock a Turin debut. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul remain in the hunt. Djokovic had reached the Australian Open final in January and won his 102nd tour-level title in Beijing last month.
