Roma led through Matías Soulé and a Donyell Malen penalty, and United's fans booed the team off at halftime. Midfielder Carlos Baleba left with a hamstring injury early in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes scored a retaken penalty after Devis Vásquez saved his first attempt. Cunha equalized in the 83rd minute after a poor clearance by Leonardo Balerdi and scored the winner from substitute Shea Lacey's pass, then was sent off for a second yellow card.

The night began with fan protests against the club's owners, the Glazer family. "The club needed that win, the players needed that win," Fernandes said. United hosts Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 8.

Cunha equalized in the 83rd minute after a poor clearance by Leonardo Balerdi, and scored the winner at the near post from substitute Shea Lacey's pass.

He was then sent off for a second yellow card, after a booking for his celebration and a late lunge at Balerdi.

The night began with fan protests against the club's owners, the Glazer family.

"Proud of a lot of people actually, proud of the players, and they deserve a lot of credit for pulling through that in a tough situation," head coach Michael Carrick said.

Fernandes, whom Carrick had benched in a recent league game, said: "We don't need to save anyone's job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win."

United hosts Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 8.
