Viking Snatch Late Draw With Bayern
Substitute Herman Haugen headed a 90th-minute equaliser as Norway's Viking drew 3–3 with 10-man Bayern Munich after Michael Olise was sent off.
Viking, the Norwegian champions from Stavanger, drew 3–3 with Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October (BBC Sport; AFP). Herman Haugen, who came on as a substitute, headed in the equaliser in the 90th minute after Bayern had been reduced to 10 men (BBC Sport; AFP).
It was a result few expected. Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Viking are playing in the Champions League for the first time since the 1992–93 season, and BBC Sport said they were in Norway's second division as recently as 2018 (BBC Sport).
Viking started fast. Gianni Stensness headed them in front inside two minutes (UEFA; BBC Sport). Peter Christiansen made it 2–0 in the 38th minute, and the home side took that lead into half-time (UEFA; BBC Sport).
Bayern turned the game around after the break through Harry Kane. He scored a penalty in the 54th minute and then headed in a cross from Joshua Kimmich in the 60th to make it 2–2 (BBC Sport). Luis Díaz put Bayern ahead 3–2 in the 71st minute (BBC Sport). In 17 minutes, Bayern had turned a two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead, and the game seemed to be going the way most people had predicted.
The game changed again soon after. Michael Olise was sent off for a second yellow card, a second caution in the same match, which means a player must leave the field (AFP; BBC Sport). He was shown it for throwing the ball at the face of Viking's captain, Zlatko Tripić (AFP; BBC Sport). UEFA's match record puts the red card in the 74th minute; BBC Sport's report has the 73rd (UEFA; BBC Sport).
With a man more, Viking kept pushing, and Haugen's header in the 90th minute earned the draw (BBC Sport; AFP). It was the second time in the match that Viking had scored with a header, after Stensness's opener in the first two minutes, and it earned their first point of the league phase.
Bayern's coach, Vincent Kompany, did not defend his player. "This red card was super dumb," he said (AFP).
Kane's two goals extended a remarkable run. He has now scored in nine Champions League matches in a row, two short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 11 (AFP; BBC Sport). BBC Sport also said Kane's 36 goals in the competition since he turned 30 are one more than Lionel Messi's 35 over the same stage of his career (BBC Sport).
For Viking, the draw is their first point of this season's league phase, in which each club plays eight matches (UEFA). The top eight clubs go straight to the round of 16, and those placed ninth to 24th go into a play-off round (UEFA).
For Bayern, the cost of the red card goes beyond two dropped points. Olise is suspended for their next Champions League match, at home to Arsenal on 21 October (BBC Sport). That is one of the biggest games of Bayern's league phase, and they will play it without one of their main attacking players.
