PSG Win 4–2 at Manchester City
Paris Saint-Germain led 3–0 at halftime, and Erling Haaland's two goals for City came too late.
Paris Saint-Germain, the Champions League holders, beat Manchester City 4–2 at the Etihad Stadium. They led 3–0 at halftime. Kickoff was 8 p.m. in Manchester (3 p.m. ET), and the crowd was 60,021.
PSG scored three times in the first 32 minutes. Désiré Doué scored first in the 13th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the area into the bottom corner.
Two minutes later Doué turned provider. Ousmane Dembélé played the ball to him and ran on, and Doué returned it for Dembélé to head in from close range at the right side of the six-yard box.
Vitinha made it 3–0 in the 32nd minute, shooting into the bottom corner from the center of the area.
City's coach, Enzo Maresca, made three changes at halftime, one of them in defense. Iliman Ndiaye replaced Jérémy Doku, Matheus Nunes replaced Rúben Dias and Ayyoub Bouaddi replaced Rayan Cherki.
Ndiaye made the first goal of the second half. In the 53rd minute he crossed and Erling Haaland headed into the top corner.
PSG answered ten minutes later and restored the three-goal lead. Maghnes Akliouche shot from outside the area in the 63rd minute; City's goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, a former PSG player, saved it, but the ball dropped behind him into the net for 4–1.
Haaland scored again in the 75th minute, with a right-footed shot from the center of the area. ESPN said the two goals made him City's record scorer in the competition, with 38 in 41 matches.
PSG made changes to see the game out. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had replaced Doué in the 66th minute, and Ferran Torres, a former City forward, and João Neves came on for Dembélé and Akliouche in the 76th.
In the 90th minute PSG were given a penalty. Torres took it, and Donnarumma saved it, one of his six saves. City brought on Nico O'Reilly for Enzo Fernández in the final minutes, and the score stayed 4–2.
City had more of the ball, 54 percent, and 27 shots to PSG's 15. Nine of City's were on target, and PSG's goalkeeper, Matvei Safonov, made six saves. PSG put 10 of their 15 on target and scored four. City won 11 corners to PSG's two and sent in 26 crosses to PSG's three; PSG made 29 clearances.
Both sides had one player booked: Antoine Semenyo of City in the 61st minute and Warren Zaïre-Emery of PSG in the 69th. Zaïre-Emery and Fabián Ruiz went off in the 84th minute for Beraldo and Lucas Hernández.
It was City's first home match since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules. Pep Guardiola, their former manager, watched from the stands.
Maresca spoke about PSG after the match. "They are the best team in Europe. They play fantastic football," he said. "But I think we are there."
City said it was their first defeat in eight matches. PSG have won both their matches and top the league-phase table.
Wednesday's nine Champions League matches produced 46 goals, among them Real Madrid's 4–3 win at Roma, Aston Villa's 6–0 win over Fenerbahçe and Liverpool's 6–3 win at LASK.
