Gea Beats Mensik to Reach Shanghai Quarter-Finals

Arthur Gea, 21, beat No. 13 seed Jakub Mensik 7–6(4), 6–4 to reach the last eight in his first Masters 1000 tournament.

Arthur Gea of France beat Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic 7–6(4), 6–4 on Tuesday, 13 October to reach the quarter-finals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters (ATP Tour). It is the first Masters 1000 tournament of the 21-year-old's career. Masters 1000 events are the level just below the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Mensik, also 21, was the No. 13 seed and is ranked No. 15 in the world. Gea came to Shanghai unseeded and ranked No. 56, the highest of his career (ATP Tour; Tennis.com).

It was his second straight win over a seeded player. In the previous round he beat Ben Shelton of the United States, the No. 3 seed, in straight sets, after needing three sets to get past Jaime Faria and Ugo Humbert in his first two matches (ATP Tour). The ATP said he is the eighth active French player to reach a Masters 1000 quarter-final.

The ATP headline called him a "Top-20 slayer". He now has four wins in five matches against players ranked in the world's top 20 (ATP Tour). Shelton and Mensik were the latest two.

The first set went to a tiebreak, the first-to-seven-points game played at 6–6. Gea fell 0–3 behind, then won seven of the last eight points to take it (ATP Tour).

His serve carried the match. He served 11 aces, serves Mensik could not touch, to Mensik's six, and won 39 of his 49 points on his first serve, according to the ATP's official statistics (ATP Tour). He did not lose a service game and saved both break points he faced, chances Mensik had to win a game on Gea's serve, according to Tennis.com's match statistics (Tennis.com). Gea broke Mensik once, and that was enough: the single break came in the second set, which he then served out (Tennis.com; ATP Tour). The match took one hour 37 minutes (ATP Tour).

"I had a little revenge today, because at the US Open I stopped in this round," Gea said, referring to his fourth-round exit in New York (ATP Tour).

The win continues the best season of his career. Since July he has won 13 of his 15 tour-level matches, according to the ATP, and in August he won his first tour title, in Los Cabos (ATP Tour). The ATP's live rankings now have him at No. 44, which means he is guaranteed to enter the world's top 50 for the first time when the rankings are published next Monday (ATP Tour).

His quarter-final opponent is not yet known. He will face either Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, a former Shanghai champion, or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, who play each other in the fourth round (ATP Tour; Tennis.com). ESPN lists the quarter-final for Thursday.

Mensik had beaten Miomir Kecmanovic and Francisco Cerundolo to reach the fourth round (ATP Tour).
