The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 31–10 on Monday Night Football, 14 September, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., AP (via NBC News and CBS Sports), ESPN, and The Guardian reported. It was Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season and the first meeting of the AFC West rivals after Denver took the division crown that had belonged to Kansas City for nine seasons.
Kenneth Walker III, signed in free agency on a three-year, $43.05 million deal after winning Super Bowl MVP with Seattle, carried 23 times for 173 yards and scored two touchdowns — one rushing, one receiving — on the AP/NBC and CBS box. ESPN’s feature matched the rushing line and the two-score night. Walker also caught three passes for 18 yards. The AP account said the 173 yards were the most by a Chiefs rusher since Jamaal Charles’s 226 against Indianapolis in 2012.
Patrick Mahomes made his first start since tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee on 14 December against the Chargers — nine months to the day, AP noted. He wore a brace on the repaired knee. On the published box he completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception, and he added a 15-yard rushing touchdown that capped Kansas City’s opening drive. AP, NBC, CBS, and The Guardian all record the brace, the 184-yard passing night, the two pass scores, and the rushing touchdown.
The scoring sequence on the AP wire and CBS play-by-play is checkable. Mahomes’s 15-yard scramble made it 7–0. Bo Nix answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram (7–7). Late in the second quarter Mahomes found Rashee Rice for a 13-yard score after a 10-play, 80-yard drive (14–7 at half). To open the third quarter Walker turned a fourth-and-1 carry into a 60-yard rushing touchdown (21–7). Wil Lutz and Harrison Butker traded field goals after Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes and after Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for 59 yards. Nix then lost a fumble recovered by Chris Jones; from there Mahomes shoveled a 2-yard touchdown pass to Walker at the goal line for the final 31–10.
Nix finished 17 of 28 for 131 yards with one touchdown pass, one interception, and a lost fumble, AP and CBS reported. Denver’s total offense was 176 yards. Jaylen Waddle, acquired from Miami in the offseason, had one catch for 2 yards. Engram led Denver with four catches for 43 yards and the Broncos’ only touchdown. Kansas City finished with 392 total yards on the CBS team page.
Reid, quoted by CBS Sports' AP recap, said Walker "did a really nice job" and that the workload was not a pre-set calculation — "you have to be making yards." Walker, on the 60-yard fourth-and-1, told AP he "knew they were going to crash in," bounced outside, and "was off to the races." Mahomes, also on CBS/AP, said Denver had been in the AFC championship game for a reason and asked how Kansas City could be better after the win. Nix said the offense and team "just didn't play really good"; Payton called it "obviously not a good evening," both on the same AP recap.
Injury notes on that CBS/AP wire: Chiefs cornerback Mansoor Delane, the No. 6 pick, left after an interception on the third play of the game with a right-shoulder landing and did not return; linebacker Cooper McDonald left with a knee injury and did not return. Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims left briefly with a hip injury but returned. Those are named medical lines on the published recap, not desk speculation.
Named actors locked to the wires: Walker (173/23, rush TD on fourth-and-1 for 60 yards, receiving TD on the shovel); Mahomes (184 pass, two pass TDs, rush TD, brace, ACL/LCL Dec. 14); Nix (131, INT, lost fumble); Rice, Kelce, Engram, Butker, Lutz, Jones; coaches Andy Reid and Sean Payton as quoted on CBS. The desk does not add Week 2 forecasts. The observable record is a 31–10 Arrowhead result, Walker’s debut line, Mahomes’s return numbers, and Denver’s 176 yards.
What comes next is checkable: Kansas City’s next published home game against Indianapolis on Sunday night; Denver’s home opener against Jacksonville on Sunday; both clubs’ Week 1 box scores on NFL/ESPN/CBS.
